One warning that changes everything
You’re driving your Ferrari FF. The V12 is running smoothly, the road ahead is clear. Then suddenly – the display shows “4WD Failure”. The Manettino locks in wet mode. The car stops responding the way it should. This is not a minor fault to ignore. It’s a signal that your power transfer unit has started to fail.

What is the PTU and why does it fail?
The PTU (Power Transfer Unit), or front gearbox, is the heart of the four-wheel-drive system in the Ferrari FF and GTC4 Lusso. It is responsible for distributing torque between the axles and controlling the gearbox via hydraulic selector forks.
The problem lies in the design of the hydraulic fork assemblies. Over time, hydraulic fluid leaks into the gearbox casing – the oils mix, fluid levels drop and the system loses pressure. The result? That warning message on the dashboard and a locked Manettino. If you don’t act at this point, the fault progresses and can lead to serious mechanical damage throughout the entire unit.
This is a well-known weakness of these models – and for a long time owners had only one option.
Dealer replacement? A prohibitive cost
The official answer from authorised Ferrari dealers to a PTU failure is straightforward: replace the entire unit with a new one. That sounds reasonable – until you see the price. The cost of a new PTU plus labour is enough to make even a Ferrari owner wince.
Worse still, fitting new for old does nothing to eliminate the root cause of the problem. The same design, the same weak points – the clock simply starts ticking again towards the next failure.
The solution: professional PTU rebuild at Alda Motorsport
At Alda Motorsport we take a different approach. Instead of replacing the entire unit, we carry out a thorough PTU rebuild – while eliminating the original design weaknesses at the same time.
The key is re-engineering the hydraulic fork assemblies using materials far superior to the originals:
- Forks are CNC-machined from aerospace-grade billet aluminium, hard anodised for extended durability
- Hydraulic shafts are made from high-strength chromoly steel with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating – providing approximately 30% better wear resistance and anti-friction properties than the standard parts
- Seal housings are manufactured from aerospace-grade nickel bronze – the same material used in aircraft landing gear
Every rebuilt unit is tested on a dedicated hydraulic test rig – we verify the fork assembly is leak-free before it goes anywhere near the car, then run the PTU on an external test bench through a full drive cycle with multiple gear changes. Only a unit that passes all tests without issue is installed in your car.
